North Cyprus (TRNC)

Kyrenia (Girne) is the most famous and popular town in North Cyprus, it’s also where all visitors to the island are naturally drawn.

The town is built around the pretty horseshoe shaped harbour where you will find many bars and restaurants. Dominating this fantastic location is the colossal Byzantine castle known as Kyrenia Castle.

The town sprawls out from the harbour and is home to a number of interesting museums and galleries, as well as being a hub for local tradesmen.

Kyrenia - Girne town is located behind the harbour and it is well worth a wander along the narrow streets where you will find small shops, cafes and restaurants with tiny courtyards all tucked away in the shade of the buildings.

Take time out to explore the back streets or Kyrenia - Girne from the harbour to the mosque and then if you fancy some shopping the main shops are all fairly centrally located.

Banks, money exchange offices, souvenir shops, clothes shops, pharmacies, estate agencies, taxis, bars, cafes and restaurants can all be found in the centre of the town.

Kyrenia - Girne harbour is so picturesque it’s a natural draw! Strolling around for the first time is an unforgettable experience. Harbour side cafes and bars are great places for whiling away sunny hours overlooking the small fishing vessels, tourist boats and occasional yachts that vie for position on the overcrowded quays.

At night, especially in the summer, the harbour is alive with dozens of tourists having their after dinner complimentary brandies and liqueurs. A great place for people watching!

The Kyrenia - Girne castle is lit up beautifully at night and adds a stunning focal point to the whole harbour area. Dating back to the late 12th century, it is believed to have been built on a former Roman fort. Today, it attracts many inquisitive visitors.

The Shipwreck museum within the castle houses one of the oldest ships ever recovered from the sea. It was raised off the shore of North Cyprus - Kyrenia and has been beautifully preserved.

From the top of the castle you can see the whole of Kyrenia - Girne town and the back drop will be the stunning gothic-like Kyrenia mountain range. Straight ahead of the castle, across the Mediterranean, lies Turkey. Only 90km away on a clear day you can see the coast and the mountains.

Northern Cyprus is blessed with natural beauty and the charming historic town of Kyrenia  - Girne is truly the jewel in the crown. There is literally something for everyone to see and do - whether it’s to taste the fine seafood, to step back thousands of years in history or to simply relax and watch the world go by in one of the most beautiful locations the Mediterranean has to offer.

Just 10 minutes above Kyrenia - Girne is the beautiful village of Bellapais and its famous Abbey. A visit to this 14th century Lusignan abbey is a must.
