There are many car showrooms in Northern Cyprus giving you an excellent choice of options of new and used cars. It is advisable to buy cars in joint names. Unleaded petrol is available as is diesel. There are servicing agents for a wide range of cars but spare parts could pose a problem for some makes. If a car is taken out of the country – for example for a holiday in Turkey – then an export certificate has to be obtained and it subsequently has to be re-imported for a small fee.

All locally registered cars are liable for a Road Tax, paid annually at the North Cyprus office in Kyrenia (Girne), Nicosia (Lefkosa), Güzelyurt and Famagusta (Gazi Mağusa); cars over three years old are required to have an MOT test, repeated every three years before the annual licensc is issued. A Road Fund Licence disc will be issued. Diesel cars are taxed at a higher rate than petrol vehicles. This is offset by diesel being cheaper at the pump.
