Working, Companies, Importation and Language Restrictions

Turkish is of course the national language in North Cyprus but you will find English more than widely spoken! Public facing jobs in North Cyprus usually require English speaking professionals and so it is quite easy for British expatriates to find suitable employment. If you can at least learn the basics in Turkish so you can politely introduce yourself and enquire after a client, customer or employer’s health etc., you will find yourself more easily accepted.

To open a Limited Company in North Cyprus, You must instruct an accountant to make applications on your behalf to the TRNC Council of Ministers. The share capital required now is US$100,000 for a Foreign Company. However, if you have a Turkish Cypriot majority shareholder this figure is reduced considerably. The application must involve the trading intentions of the company, directors, etc. Once the TRNC Council of Ministers has given permissions, you must apply to Immigration for an annually renewable business permit. TB and AIDS medical tests must be completed. When clearances of the medical examinations are approved, you register the company with social security and the tax authorities. For retired persons: you can import a full household of furniture, which is virtually tax free (normally between 2-3%). Retired people only need a residency permit to reside on the North Cyprus Island.
