Peace Talks on Cyprus to Resume 

Agreement has been reached to resume talks on reunifying the island of Cyprus. 

This was agreed during a meeting between Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat.  The meeting took place in Nicosia. 

Another agreement reached was that a key crossing point in the divided Capital of Cyprus will open. 

It has been reported that Mehmet Ali Talat said “This is a new era we are starting for the solution of the Cyprus Problem” 

Furthermore it was reported that Demetris Christofias said “We shall try our utmost in order to come to an agreed solution for the interest of the Cypriot people, both communities, as soon as possible”. 

It is reported that the talks will be held under the UN auspices. 

Crossing re-opening 

The two leaders agreed that the crossing at Ledra Street, (pedestrian thoroughfare, running along Nicosia’s dividing line) would reopen.
