Rent a Car in North Cyprus

There are many car rental companies operating in Northern Cyprus. For car hire over three days usually the North Cyprus car hire firm will have a complimentary pick up and drop off airport transfer. It should be noted that the wearing of seat belts is compulsory and you must carry your driving license at all times. Driving in Northern Cyprus is on the left and all traffic signs are International. Drink driving is a serious offence here and can result in imprisonment. TRNC Airports/Transport

Erçan airport is the main airport in North Cyprus. Geçitkale is a back-up airport. There are flights from Europe and mainland Turkey. There are no direct flights from Europe to the TRNC you have to land in Turkey with a 45-minute stop over before completing your journey. There are also daily car and passenger ferries from Turkey and Israel to the island. Many people enjoy taking the ferry from Kyrenia to Taşucu in Turkey for cheap shopping.

North Cyprus Taxi Services

In North Cyprus taxis are widely available. Taxi charges are regulated by law and taxi drivers are obliged to use a taximeter. Rates vary from 7-20 YTL (within the borders of one town) to 40-70 YTL (between towns and from / to the airport).

It is hard to "flag" a taxi on the street. It is easier to find one at a taxi rank. Taxi stands are located at Erçan airport, Kyrenia Gate (Girne Kapisi) area and big hotels. If you need taxi services between 9 pm and 8 am, it is better to arrange this beforehand. Taxi drivers are punctual and will pick you up from where you are.

Public Transport in TRNC

There is a well organised system of public buses and mini buses in North Cyprus that is managed by the local authorities. Buses run every 15-30 minutes during the day depending on their destination, however departure times are not fixed. Public transport services are less frequent after 5pm and during the weekend.

All the bus routes start at the Bus Terminal or Girne Kapisi (Kyrenia Gate) in the centre of the city and cover all the areas of the city.

The current fares include 1 YTL for the buses that cover the city within its borders and 2.5-3 YTL for a trip between the towns.

In addition to buses you may get so-called 'dolmus', share taxis which may take 6-8 passengers. Passengers divide the cost of services between each other. It is a convenient way to get a ride, however sometimes you will have to wait till the driver drops off passengers who took the taxi earlier than you.
