Famagusta

Famagusta known as Gazimagusa or Magusa is located at the far East coast of North Cyprus and has a long and fascinating history.

North Cyprus Holiday - FamagustaVisitors to Famagusta’s old town will be taken aback by how ram shackled and ruined it appears considering it was once the most rich, lavish city in the Eastern Mediterranean.

It was around 1291 that the town became prosperous due to an influx of Christian refugees. Famagusta benefited from the demographic lift and grew to become one of, if not the wealthiest and successful city in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its harbour became an important trading centre.

Many churches belonging to different religions sprang up due to the wealth Famagusta had. Reportedly there were as many churches as there were days in the year! In 1372, when the city was seized by the Genoese, the city’s fortunes began to change for the worst, further deteriorating following the Ottoman invasion 1571.

Today a town in partial ruins, broken churches, destruction and half finished buildings is what the visitor will see today.

More recently Famagusta’s history is equally as turbulent. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Famagusta town was the most desirable tourist destination in the Med. It held great attraction for local Greek and Turkish Cypriots alike. Subsequent to the conflict of 1974 the town’s tourist industry was completely destroyed.

Fortunately much has changed since 1974 and Famagusta has become a thriving tourist resort once again. Many new hotels are planned around the Bafra area and many new properties are being constructed to lure the shrewd investor.
A visit to Famagusta and surrounding areas is truly a must!
