Lapta
Lapta is located approximately 8 miles west of Kyrenia-Girne. It has some excellent hotels and general accommodation options for visitors to North Cyprus.
Close to Karsiyaka and a short distance from central Girne –Kyrenia, Lapta has always been considered a tourist hotspot. Offering Home makers and holiday makers alike a good base in Northern Cyprus.
Visiting the town of Lapta you will find it has been divided into two sections, the Lapta strip, and the old town.
The main town is popular for its beautiful views and good selection of restaurants. The ‘Lapta strip’ is home to a number of bars, restaurants, pubs, cafes and hotels. Casinos, sandy beaches, water sports and live music are all on offer. Tourists of all ages are extremely well catered for.
The old town of Lapta has been a popular retreat for expatriates for many years; initially attracted by the town’s excellent pure water supply. Lapta is one of the richest and historically interesting areas of Cyprus.
During the 8th century the Phoenicians were known to have settled in Cyprus and during this time Lapithos, now known as Lapta was to become one of the city kingdoms of Cyprus. Later under Roman rule Lapta (Lapithos) was a regional capital of Cyprus.
During the Byzantine period Lapta (Lambousa) was renowned as ‘the city of treasure’ it was also very prosperous. Unfortunately this led to Lapta being invaded by Arab pirates which in turn bought about its partial destruction. The residents of Lapta were forced to hand over treasures before they could flee. However they did manage to hide some of their wealth but to no avail as when the pirates left behind a ransacked Lapta (Lambousa) the city had been destroyed and the residents on return were unable to find or unearth what they had hidden.
Lapta is also well-known for its wealth of richly flavoured fruit and vegetable crops nourished by the mountain springs. Lapta is a town rich in resources due to its history, charm, appeal and natural beauty.
