Donaghy and Beyler Guide to

Major Towns, Cities and Villages in
North Cyprus (TRNC)

Lefke

Lefke is a small town nestled below the Troodos Mountains, 74 km from Nicosia.

Inhabitants of this town will be very quick to tell you their citrus fruits are the tastiest North or South of the Island of Cyprus. The Turkish character is reflected by the dominance of the Ottoman Empire for more than three hundred years.

Once a prosperous mining town, Lefke is now home to one of North Cyprus’ prominent universities – The European University of Lefke, in addition to some of the most interesting examples of Ottoman architecture to be seen in North Cyprus.

Near Guzelyurt the town of Lefke is a mixture of coastline and mountains, lush with citrus groves but is also important for its historical riches. This is the place in North Cyprus where the Yafa orange were grown.

Along the coastline there are a number of restaurants where you might choose to enjoy Turkish cuisine or fresh fish at one of the very popular fish restaurants of North Cyprus.

Travel through Lefke's town centre and up to the mountains which are overlooked by the Troodos.  The Troodos is so close during the winter you can see its snow capped summits.  Located at the centre of Lefke is Ataturk Park, which hosts an annual fair during the middle of August, this fair takes place to celebrate the freedom of Lefke during the war.

Close by is the ancient city of Soli where you can see a Roman theatre, Basilica and Agora discovered in 1929. The theatre is still in use today hosting concerts and plays.

A little further away you will find the remains of the Palace of Vouni which is located on top of a mountain; it is believed that the Palace was built during the Persian occupation in the 5th Century
